5.21.2005New School in Downtown AkronFirst there were massive cuts to the school, then the grading scale was changed. Now, after all the budget cuts and closing of schools, guess what Akron's getting? That right, a new school! The idea of a school inside the National Inventors Hall of Fame has moved from imagination to reality.I guess I have mixed emotions about this. I like the idea of having schools that allow kids to focus more on their interests, this school focusing on the sciences. I'm also glad that the school will take advantage of an amazing building in Downtown. But I'm a little upset that the district has chose to open a new school instead of renovating one of the soon-to-be-closed schools. Potential backlash could really hurt the school. In the end though, it'll be how the kids do in the new school that will determine how I really feel about the project. If Akron can prove that this more focused school can produce well-educated middle schoolers, then I guess it'll be worth it.
