5.26.2005Rally to Save EssexEssex Elementary is one of the nine schools slated to be closed. Last night a rally was held in support of the school. The gymnasium, decorated with student-made signs reading ``Save Essex'' and ``Keep Essex Open,'' was filled with about 50 supporters, who voiced their opinions about the possible closing of the 263-pupil school.Okay, 50 supporters of a school of 263. Let's see... 50 people among students, parents, local residents, teachers and city council people. That doesn't seem like overwhelming support to me. Let's assume for a minute that all 50 people there were parents and that each parent represented one kid, that means that under 20% of the parents care enough about the school to try to keep it open leaving 80% who support the city's plan or just plain don't care. I'm not saying it's right to close the school, but what I am saying is if people are so outraged, they need get out there and make their voices heard. 20% is by no means a majority and not enough to keep open a school that the city views as a potential burden on taxpayers. If you care, do something. Don't just say it at home griping to yourself, call, write, e-mail or knock on the door of your city reps. It's your city, let 'em know how you feel.
