What's a Mitzvah Day?

I'm all about volunteering, but what's a Mitzvah Day?

Congregants from Temple Israel, First Congregational Church, Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron, St. John CME Church and St. Vincent Catholic Church gathered at a pep rally May 1, pictured at right, in preparation for Mitzvah Day, which will take place May 22. Two hundred fifty people will be performing good deeds around the community that day.

This could be a fun event if we knew what a Mitzvah was. I'm guessing it's just a massive volunteer day for the area, but I'm not sure if there's a reason for it. Not that there needs to be one, but to name it Mitzvah Day, I'd think there'd be a reason for it.
