Just One More Shot

I'm creeped out by meningitis. My friend's dad passed away due to it shortly after I graduated high school. He was fine one week and gone the next. The disease strikes quickly and there is little that can be done once it has been contracted. Luckily there is now a vaccine for it.

Julianne Franks is unequivocal in her message to parents: Get your teens vaccinated against meningitis.

She certainly wishes she would have had the option when her daughter entered her teen years. But the vaccine Menactra -- approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January -- didn't exist back then. And in May of 2001, Franks' daughter, Christin Van Camp, was one of three Alliance teens stricken with meningococcal meningitis, the most deadly form of the disease.

The BJ article talks about teens getting the shot, but the article also suggests that people who may be exposed to it can get the shot. So if you have a fear of needles, suck it up and deal, this is totally worth it.
