Settling for Less

I really wanted to blog about this Meth Lab article in The BJ, but it was too long and oppressive. So I'm settling for less. Instead I'm gonna blog about something that could impact us all: a sales tax hike.

An extra 0.5 percent sales tax would bring in roughly $36 million a year in the county. [Green Mayor Dan] Croghan said that would be more than enough to make up for any cuts to the Local Government Fund and give law enforcement agencies the $8 million to $10 million they are seeking to help support countywide programs like the drug task force.

The move comes at a time when the state will be repealing a half penny of sales tax on June 30 -- reducing it from its current 6.75 percent back to 6.25 percent.

So if approved, residents wouldn't notice an increase in sales tax -- they would just agree to forfeit their decrease and continue paying 6.75 percent.

So I guess in a way this article does relate to meth labs. A good portion of the new cash flow would be used to fund local police, and they're the ones dealing the Summit's meth issues. The good news is we wouldn't really notice the tax increase; so if it happens, nothing changes.
