Akron Art ReviewsNorthside ArtMany of you are already aware of that the Northside District used to be a center of art and music for Akron . After the area was cleared a few decades back, the arts died out, but slowly they are returning to the area. Now with the unveiling of the Testa Loft project, the area is buzzing with new potential. But even before the buzz around the new homes began, some locals have been dedicated to keeping the art in Northside. Many of you out there would recognize the giant cockroach on the side of the TNT Exterminating building anywhere. And you can’t forget the catfish sculpture at the corner of Howard and Furnace. These were both done by local artist John Comunale. If you’re hunting for a gallery, Northside is starting to get its fair share. There is the Millworks Gallery located below Jack’s coffee shops. They feature some great local artists. Over at Northside, the upstairs (the old brothel) has been converted into a gallery. The little rooms are great for creating unique environments for the different artists’ works. The Northside Ice and Coal Complex is becomeing an integral part of the Northside arts community. The Industrial Cathedral has been the host to the performing arts. Juxtaposing the old coal warehouse with modern interpretations has led to a unique space perfectly suited for the arts. It’s hard to give a blimp rating since there are so many different places within a few block radius. So instead I’ll just give art 5 blimps. That seems like something a modern artist will do. We’ll go with that. Art: |
