New Wave Fun

Even from the outside, I know I was going to have fun at Thursday’s Lounge. Located on the Zip Strip, Thursday’s is an oasis from the traditional college bar. I walked into a new wave haven; a bar filled with hipster guys and emo chicks and people that defy classification. To my left, the small dance floor was starting to fill up. At the right I saw the bar was relatively empty, so I bounded on the opportunity for a drink.

Usually, what indy bars lack in booze they make up for with a killer atmosphere and great music, but no need to make excuses for Thursdays. They have a great bar filled with my favorite liquors. I ordered my usual vodka tonic and settled in for a night of New Wave fun.

I chatted with the friends I came in with until the dance floor practically filled up. Then we headed to the floor ourselves. The dance floor is small and mirrored, two things that when under the influence of alcohol seem absolutely amazing. I kept staring at this one girl’s amazing tattoo, again, I blame the booze for the staring, but it was so intricate. I really respect her for the pain she had to endure; I know I couldn’t do it. Anyway, back to the bar.

After I remembered that I’m a bad dancer, I went back to bar so I could obtain the means to forget that I’m a bad dancer. I wandered about with my new beverage, I found that there is a patio; well, it looked more like a prison yard. I’m sure it’s a nice escape from the music and crowds, but I couldn’t face it. By now, my brain was swimming in alcohol so I headed back to the dance floor to dance the night.

I unfortunately didn’t go on one of their live music nights, but my friends who are regulars have told me they get some great local acts. I’m really upset that I wasn’t there on Valentine’s Day: they brought in Henry Rollins to do a spoken word show.
