Queer Akron User's GuideAll thing good and gay in Akron seem to center around Highland Square. Though there are only a few GLBT businesses, almost all very friendly. This area has also be become a homo homestead. There is plenty of housing in the area that is walking distance to several bars and restaurants that is still affordable. In the Square, you’ll find Two Amigos Mexican Grill and Aladdin’s. These two restaurants offer good cheap food in a queer friendly environment. Walk over to Angel Falls after your meal. This is Akron’s queer coffee house, but don’t drink the coffee unless you like bitter crappy coffee. They have great smoothies and tons of tea to try, but I’d recommend their mulled cidar. Their treats are tasty but a bit expensive. Working your way towards downtown, your next stop is The Interbelt. This is an Akron institution. It used to be the largest gay bar in Ohio. It’s still draws a great crowd, especially during the summer when their patio is open and all the boys forget where they left their t-shirts. Evolution Revolution is further down the way. It’s a hip space converted from an old bowling alley. Unfortunately, it’s usually pretty dead. The people who work here are easy to talk to, probably because you’re the most excitement they’ve seen in weeks. Tear-Ez and Club Amsterdam are right in downtown. Parking generally sucks here so I avoid it at all costs. Adams Street is next to the Akron Pride Center. It’s Akron quasi-leather bar. And what a quasi-leather bar without an attached piano bar? Pec’s is attached to Adam’s Street and is great place to go for a change from the normal Akron Scene. Lydia’s actually has live music on a regular basis. It’s a nice change from the blaring dance music. Rosetto used to be a private club, but now is public. I’ve heard it’s nice, but my bar crawls have never gotten me there. Recently, I finally found Cocktails. I wasn't there long, but it looks like I could have some fun there. In any case, no matter where you go, I’m sure you’ll have a gay old time.
